Sensory Integration

Sensory integration for children at the Skazka center — working with overload, avoidance, or sensory seeking, when the "body gets in the way" of attention, speech, and behavior.

Анна Глазырина — нейропсихолог центра «Сказка»

What is sensory integration?

Sensory integration is the brain''s ability to receive, process, and combine signals from the body and the environment — tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive, visual, and auditory. When this processing is disrupted, a child may avoid touch and noise, seek out strong sensations instead, become overloaded quickly, or "not feel" their own body.

At Skazka, we build sensory work into individual programs through movement, carefully dosed stimuli, and clear strategies for home. This is not a replacement for neurocorrection, but a related focus used when sensory features are the main concern. For children with ASD, sensory integration is often combined with habilitation.

When sensory integration is needed

Common concerns from parents

volume_off

Overload

The child covers their ears, avoids noisy places, and reacts sharply to light, smells, or crowds.

touch_app

Touch and body awareness

Cannot tolerate certain clothing or tags, avoids or seeks strong touch, or seems "unaware" of their body in space.

directions_run

Movement and balance

Constantly spinning or jumping, afraid of swings or heights, clumsy, or finds it hard to sit still.

What parents can expect

Fewer meltdowns

The child copes better with everyday stimuli, with fewer "explosions" over noise, waiting, or getting dressed.

Better self-regulation

More ways to calm down through movement and clear routines, rather than only through crying.

Support for the family

Parents learn which stimuli help and which overwhelm — and how to dose activity at home.

How the program is built

1

The request

We identify the situations where the child becomes overloaded or seeks out stimulation.

2

Observation

We observe the child's reaction to movement, touch, sound, and activity during a session.

3

Program

We choose exercises and home strategies, and connect with neurocorrection or habilitation if needed.

4

Progress

We track changes at home, in daycare, and at school, and adjust the plan.

Frequently asked questions

How is sensory integration different from neurocorrection? expand_more
Neurocorrection works more broadly with attention, memory, and the "maturing" of brain functions through motor and cognitive exercises. Sensory integration focuses specifically on how a child processes sensations from the body and the environment. The two programs are often combined.
Is sensory integration needed for children with ASD? expand_more
Often, yes: sensory overload and unusual processing of stimuli are common with ASD. We build sensory work into [habilitation](/en/services/autism-habilitation) or run it as a separate focus after diagnostics.
From what age can a child start? expand_more
Usually from preschool age, once the child can take part in a session. We choose the format individually after an initial meeting or [diagnostics](/en/services/differential-diagnostics).
Which branch offers sensory integration in Bendery? expand_more
Sessions in Bendery take place at our branch on Kalinina St. 45. Contact us to check availability and book a convenient time.
Is this a medical procedure? expand_more
No. This is educational and corrective work on sensory modulation and self-regulation at a child development center. If needed, we recommend consultations with related specialists.
